Overcoming Neck Pain, Back Pain, and Sciatica: Achieve Lasting Pain Relief!

leave a comment

Neck Pain, Back Pain, and Sciatica are Effectively Relieved by Eliminating the 5 Factors Affecting The Back Pain Complex!

We have addressed the various curvatures of the spine here, on blogs, and on the various video sharing sites across the Internet. It should be apparent to you by now that the primary and secondary curvatures of the spine play a central role in what I refer to as the back pain complex: neck pain, back pain and/or sciatica. The curvatures are made up of the vertebrae, the intervertebral discs or IVDs, the connective tissue that helps to support the spine and the various other structures of the body, and the tendons and muscles that move the structures of the body…in this case our focus being the spine.

Several factors work against the various curvatures of the spine, contributing to neck pain, back pain and/or sciatica. The five factors that have the greatest impact on the spine are:

1. Excess weight or obesity

2. Muscle weakness

3. Muscle imbalance

4. Improper or inadequate diet and nutrition

5. Hydration or rather dehydration

Excessive Weight, Obesity, and The Back Pain Complex

Excess weight and/or obesity have a significant impact, particularly on the secondary curvatures, those of the cervical and lumbar regions… the neck and low back. The cervical and lumbar regions already come under tremendous stress on a day-to-day basis as they attempt to deal with the stress associated with holding our heads up and walking upright. As we add extra weight, these curvatures often undergo significant structural changes, exacerbating neck pain and lower back pain, respectively.
Muscle weakness contributes to neck pain, back pain and/or sciatica in a number of different ways. Not only do we experience pain as a result of muscle strain and muscle spasm, we also experience pain as a result of increased stress being transferred from the muscles that should handle and absorb the stress to the associated and adjoining structures not meant to handle that level or degree of stress and trauma. Muscle weakness, while seemingly a simple concept, is actually quite complicated and affects the entire musculoskeletal system in an adverse manner.

Muscle Imbalance and The Back Pain Complex

Muscle imbalance is a difficult concept for many to grasp because it is rarely discussed, and even more infrequently dealt with by the medical community. However, muscle imbalance is central to understanding and developing a strategy for the relief of neck pain, back pain, and sciatica. The entire body is made up of opposing muscle groups, ideally working together to move the body. Unfortunately, as is the case in most relationships, one side is usually dominant over the other…this is precisely the case with muscle imbalances. As stated in a previous video, muscle imbalances are like mini arguments, muscle dialectics. One muscle argues with another muscle creating an imbalance. In order to deal with the back pain complex resulting from these arguments, it is up to us to find a solution, in this case a synergy or a synthesis between the two muscle arguments…a balance! Unless muscle balance is achieved, the underlying cause of the neck pain, back pain and/or sciatica, muscle imbalance, the pain will continue. If the muscle imbalance is not addressed, the imbalance will become more pronounced, and there will be other consequences for the spine and associated connective tissue and musculature of the musculoskeletal system.

Improper Nutrition, Inadequate Diet, and The Back Pain Complex

Improper and/or inadequate diet and nutrition is, as in the case of muscle imbalance, an often overlooked and/or ignored area when it comes to dealing with neck pain, back pain and/or sciatica. Interestingly, this area of concern is central because without adequate nutrition the body cannot rebuild itself, it cannot heal properly. Consequently, while vitally important in addressing the back pain complex, it is often ignored by the medical community. When we think of adequate diet and nutrition we often think in terms of muscle building and/or rebuilding. The fact is, diet and nutrition go to the very heart of the back pain complex. We will address this issue in much greater depth in an upcoming article, but suffice it to say, without the proper nutrition neck pain, back pain and/or sciatica cannot be completely or effectively dealt with.

Dehydration and The Back Pain Complex

Finally, hydration, or rather dehydration, is a crucial component in any strategy developed to help relieve neck pain, back pain and/or sciatica. The intervertebral discs or IVDs are primarily made up of water. Lack of adequate water intake, dehydration, negatively impacts IVD health, ultimately leading to neck pain, back pain and/or sciatica…and degenerative disc disease. We take in diet pop, coffee, tea, alcohol, and other diuretics (energy drinks being a big culprit) and rarely drink adequate amounts of water to replenish the water our bodies, and particularly the IVDs use every day to function, build, and rebuild. The result? Neck pain, back pain, sciatica, degenerative disc disease, and much more!

How to Achieve Lasting Relief: The 5 Factors and Baby Steps!

So, how do we overcome the back pain complex? We deal with the 5 contributory factors, we get active one step at a time (remembering baby steps), we keep a journal of our efforts in order to track our results (good and bad), and we use the help of those around us who are willing and able to help! Use the program I recommend at:

and please take the time to comment, tell your story, provide feedback so others can learn from your experiences and, hopefully, learn something you used that will help them to overcome their neck pain, back pain and/or sciatica!

Wishing you a healthy back!

Relief from Neck Pain, Back Pain, and Sciatica: Curvatures of the Spine Part III

leave a comment

This is where we get into the etiology, the cause of much of your neck pain, back pain and/or sciatica!

We have talked about the curvatures of the spine, primary and secondary, how they are formed and how they are affected by our habits and the behaviors we engage in on a daily basis…or don’t!

We discussed the pelvis and the sacrum, as well as the various problems we can run into there. We also discussed the 5 factors that contribute to neck pain, back pain, and sciatica. Now we are going to touch on the consequences of the 5 factors and how they work against us to create neck pain, back pain, and sciatica.

We will also discuss what you can do to get real and lasting relief from your pain.

I hope this series has been helpful, we will of course build on it and I think you will find that if you understand what is going on and how to fix it, you will be a long way towards a pain free life!

Relief from Neck Pain, Back Pain, and Sciatica: The Curvatures of the Spine Part II

leave a comment

Relief from Neck Pain, Back Pain, and Sciatica: The Curvatures of the Spine Part II deals with the pelvis and sacrum.

Neck pain, back pain, and sciatica relief is achieved primarily through an understanding of the processes that affect the spine, particularly the spinal curvatures, as we age. The primary and secondary curvatures are affected by 5 factors:

Excess weight and/or obesity
Muscle Weakness
Muscle Imbalance
Inadequate Diet and Nutrition
Dehydration

The above 5 factors, taken in concert with the spinal curvatures and the stress placed on them, particularly as we age, contribute to a breakdown of the spine and the supporting structures…and neck pain, back pain, and sciatica.

The curvatures of the spine play a central role in neck pain, back pain and sciatica.

Understanding the primary and secondary curvatures of the spine, and the factors that come into play as we age, will help you understand just why we experience neck pain, back pain, and sciatica in every greater frequency as we age.

I hope this series on the spinal curvatures and how they relate to and are impacted by aging will help you on your road to achieving lasting pain relief!

Back Pain Relief: The 3 Primary Causes of Neck Pain, Back Pain, and Sciatica

Back Pain Relief: The 3 Primary Causes of Neck Pain, Back Pain, and Sciatica

Neck pain, back pain, and sciatica affect millions of people worldwide every year. No group is immune from neck pain, back pain, and/or sciatica, although certain demographic groups seem to be at greater risk. The back pain complex may manifest itself as a dull, aching feeling or it may present as a sharp, almost unbearable pain ceasing all movement and activity until properly addressed; and, that means seeing a medical practitioner. Or, the symptoms may appear anywhere along a continuum from dull and barely noticeable to sharp, intense, and debilitating. The etiology, or cause, of the pain may be immediately apparent or an individual may wake up in the morning with a new “friend.” In fact, many of the most serious incidents of neck, back or leg pain (sciatica) are seemingly innocuous at the time, with the individual only later realizing that he or she has injured himself or herself.

The Process of Aging

So, who is most likely to suffer from this common, often debilitating condition? The most obvious answer is everyone. However, while true, certain groups are at greater risk, for a myriad of reasons from aging to the type of work we do. The first reason, the most common reason, is that we get older; and as we age, certain parts of the body, in this case primarily the neck and back, just don’t handle the aging process well. The older we get, the greater the likelihood is we will develop symptoms associated with what is commonly referred to as a “bad back.” As a rule, middle-age (30-40 years of age) is when the symptoms associated with the back pain complex first present themselves; and, men are more likely than women to present with symptoms. The difference between men and women tends to balance out somewhat after menopause, and this is generally associated with the consequences of osteoporosis.

Sedentary Lifestyle and Inadequate Fitness

The next cause of neck pain, back pain, and/or sciatica we will examine is poor or inadequate fitness. Significantly, poor fitness ranges from carrying a few too many pounds around the midsection, to consequences associated with a sedentary lifestyle. The secondary curvatures of the spine, the curvatures associated with the neck or cervical region, and the lower back or lumbar region, are most affected because of their function and the biomechanics involved with walking on two legs. The neck and the lower back are particularly prone to injury, and with it varying degrees of pain. As we age, as our muscles weaken due to inactivity. The muscles atrophy, meaning they get weaker and lose tone and strength. As the muscles weaken, the secondary curvatures of the cervical and lumbar regions come under tremendous pressure as they are responsible for holding our heads upright and standing upright, walking without being bent over. The atrophied musculature, no longer doing an adequate job of supporting these two vital areas, have some of their work taken over by the intervertebral discs (IVDs) and the vertebrae themselves. When this transfer takes place, the spine comes under constant assault, and injury is the result. Degenerative disc disease, herniated discs, bulging discs, osteophytosis, and back sprains and strains are just a few of the many things that can go wrong as a result of poor fitness.

Overweight and Obesity

The third and final reason to be covered in this article is obesity. Obesity in the United States, and in much of the developed world, has reached epidemic proportions. If we carry just an extra 20 pounds, we are seriously affecting our overall health, as well as the health of the musculoskeletal system. The spine, already at risk due to inactivity and a sedentary lifestyle, comes under incredible stress, particularly at the secondary curvatures of the neck and lower back. Much of the neck pain, back pain (particularly lower back pain), and sciatica are the direct result of too much weight being carried by the body, too much stress placed on the spine.
Think about the following example: Take a 20 pound dumbbell or a 20 pound bowling ball and put it in a book bag, one of those the kids use for school. Now, wear it in front instead of on the back, and wear it all day. Get the idea? Carry that around all day, with the weight forward, and see if you can still move by the end of the day. Interestingly, most overweight individuals are more than 20 pounds overweight and experiencing neck pain, back pain, and sciatica they don’t have to, just because they are overweight!

The Back Pain Complex: In Concert

Taken in concert, aging, poor fitness, a sedentary lifestyle, and obesity lead to what I refer to as the back pain complex. The back pain complex, meaning any combination of neck pain, back pain (again, particularly lower back pain), and sciatica is avoidable or treatable, depending on your current state of fitness. Failed back surgery is a reality, a rather harsh one for many. Many never had to undergo surgery the first time, had they simply followed a few simple to implement bad back strategies.
